We're back with our creative women series, and this week we're thrilled to feature French-Australian filmmaker Nicole Lily Rose.

Nicole grew up in Melbourne, studying film at RMIT before moving to France where she's built a stellar career directing fashion and beauty films for Chanel, YSL & Vogue. We loved connecting with Nicole to hear about her professional journey, inspirations, insider Paris tips and more!

Tell us about your professional journey - highlights, learnings, mentors.

I began making films when I was a kid playing around with family cameras.  I studied film at RMIT, then built my experience in the industry on documentaries, a feature film, advertising and music videos in many different departments; production, camera, styling, editing, sound, art direction, to finally focus on directing. I make beauty and fashion films. Paris is a great place for that kind work and it’s been a highlight to work with big houses such as Chanel, YSL and Vogue.  Lately I’ve returned to working on narrative films and long form projects, which is exciting. Every job has has its own intricate learning and there’s long a road ahead, it’s always an adventure.

Describe your creative process

It all adds up, the stories I hear, the people I meet, exhibitions, films, wanderings, music, drawing; I keep a journal and take lots of pictures. When I start on a project I always do a lot of research and then I try to let it all go and just imagine, dream. Film is very collaborative process, which I love, so the team also adds their creative and technical knowledge, but it’s important to have a clear vision.  Then the film is born again in post production.

What are you working on right now, personally and professionally?

Right now, I’m making a film for Paris Vogue and a film series for a French Brand, Rouje. When I find the time, I work on my short film and a documentary series.
