KIRSTY BARROS

Kirsty Barros Aestas
This week in our creative women series, we're thrilled to profile Kirsty Barros. Kirsty is a freelance stylist, designer and creative consultant. She's an amazing creative talent with an infectious energy - we loved working with her as the stylist for our launch campaign.

Tell us about your professional journey - highlights, learnings, mentors.

I’ve always worked in fashion in some capacity. I studied fashion at RMIT and then moved on to work as a designer for various brands before going it alone curating vintage ranges to sell online via my old brand name Makers of Belief.  This organically led me to styling, art direction and costume design. I feel like my jobs have been too much fun to be considered professional but I’ve been lucky enough to eke out a living from the creative so I feel pretty lucky!

Highlights would definitely involve -

  • Sourcing vintage from the Californian flea markets whilst living in Valparaiso, Chile
  • Creating tour costumes with Australian band Client Liaison

Most people inspire me in some way! I am lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing women who follow their passions and stay true to their beliefs
Artist @mo.artist who bravely quit her career to job to pursue her dreams and make amazing art. Paige Miller of @thedustyroad who is a furniture upholsterer who resurrects old furniture.

Describe the creative process

I don’t know if I have a process. I feel like every job I have varies so greatly which makes it difficult to have routine. I’m forever researching however I’m trying to be less distracted and stay true to my own vision.  Otherwise I get lost making lists of creative projects and never seeing anything through!

What are you working on right now, personally and professionally?

I’m trying to find a moment to work on an upcycling project.
I want to mash up all the vintage materials I find to make new pieces.

Favourite self care rituals to unwind?

Yoga, running, nature immersion

Favourite travel experiences

Mexico is definitely at the top of my list!
I spent 6 weeks traveling through Mexico about 10 years ago. My boyfriend and I were planning on spending a year travelling through Mexico at the end of 2020.  We still hope to do this when travel returns to normal. I love fully immersing myself in another culture. I love relocating.  If I travel to place and love it… I’ll up root my life and move there. I’m from Melbourne and I’ve lived in Valpairaiso, Chile, LA, London, Sydney twice. I can’t wait to learn Spanish fluently!

What makes you feel most alive?

Dancing

What are you looking forward to?

As above! Viva Mexico!

Who or what is inspiring you right now?

I’m super inspired by the amazing recycling trends emerging everywhere in fashion, interiors and art etc. One of my favourite brands right now is Marine Serre who are making waves regenerating fashion

Summer is our favourite season, what’s a song, taste and place that reminds you of summer?
